Learning to sew is so much fun!
It took me a while but this is my first apron.

The gathered top is too easy. The bottom is two half circles with gathered ruffles.

If I make another apron I will absolutely line the back side of it. No one can see the stitching but I think it will make it thicker and also more washer friendly.

This was perfect for our cookie and mini gingerbread house party! With all of our nieces and nephews squirting icing, it's smart to have a shield. haha

Merry Christmas ya'll!Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-37349276266625328822016-05-14T12:45:00.002-05:002016-05-14T12:45:44.446-05:00Reusing Old Bed Pillows

Maybe it's the fire or maybe I've always been this way but I hate to toss things that can serve a second life. It was pillow replacement time!!
Faced with 4 pillows to trash, I decided to get a little creative and get a little more sewing practice for myself and my teenage daughter. This was such an easy thing for us to do together!

If you're into reusing, here's how to reuse your pillows:

1. This is an old pillow. Wash it, dry it and let's get going!

2. Fold the pillow in the direction you like. Using 8lb fishing line, sew it together. I did length but you can roll and sew it any way you like.

Why fishing line you ask? The thread kept breaking. Why 8lb? Simply because I had it and it fit through a sewing needle. The thin monofilament doesn't have the hard feel of the heavy weight stuff, so it worked perfectly for this.

3. This is the rolled up pillow all sewn and ready to be covered.

We used this bolster pillow cover tutorial except we didn't use a zipper. Instead we made a hemmed overlap so it was an envelope style pillow cover. Zippers are on our To Learn List...and we will get to them eventually. Don't look too close, my print isn't straight. It is what it is, a first attempt at sewing a bolster cover, ;) We had fun making this! We are planning to make one more and use the other two pillows to make throw pillows.

Happy crafting!!

She sat me down, very seriously, and described her cake. She asked for a "giant flamingo on a plain green background," It was very important to her that the inside of the cake be pink as well. Of course! What else would it be?

I set out using 2 rectangle 13X9 baking pans. Using my handy favorite steak knife, I cut away the parts that would become my snack cake pile (top of the photo) and left a basic flamingo shape.

With it all lined up on the board, I thought a little of the neck should be cut down. In hindsight, I should have left it longer. Eh, she's gonna love it anyway! She's four. haha

All that was left is to toss some (of course, pink) icing on it and cover it in fondant. The fondant was tricky around the neck but it worked out nice and smooth. In my opinion, with our limited cake tools we did a pretty good job.

It was a fun cake to work on with my girls. We had a good laugh at how much pink cake batter looks like pepto! Haha We are off to the party.

I hope you have a sweet day! ;)Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-32627210480590883462016-03-12T10:00:00.000-06:002016-03-12T10:00:03.501-06:00More Nightpain and all she has learned

It's been a week and Nightpain has been a fun learning tool.

After just a day my teenager was tired of lugging around a 5lb sack of flour, even this cute one!

Being the oldest cousin, dressing and even the idea of changing a diaper was nothing new or difficult for my kiddo. For her, the lesson was really having to keep up with this heavy doll 24/7. In and out of the car, up and down the stairs and while carrying other items in her hands was enough for this teenager!

Everywhere Nightpain went she was complimented. Aurora did such a good job on her little doll. The local Game Stop clerk joked that she better not set Nightpain down or someone might try to buy her! Hahaha

It was a great lesson and a good time was had by all. If you must carry a 5lb sack of flour for an educational project, give it a fun personality.! ;)

Happy crafting!

Our little Nightpain is settling in nicely.
Already she has been to the park and the court house on a field trip.

She sleeps in this basket. She gets to snuggle up with Black Butler's Sebastian and a chocobo.

The kiddo did debate making Nightpain her own mini coffin bed out of cardboard. After much thought, she decided that it would be too dark and scary, even for a baby vampire.

Let's talk about Nightpain's hair. We didn't go all out and make it perfect but we did follow this tutorial loosely. http://easypeasycraft.blogspot.com/2011/09/yarn-wig-tutorial.html

I helped a little with this part of the project. It required an extra set of hands.

Making a yarn wig was new for us but this may have started something! Hello Halloween projects!!

See you next time.
Happy crafting!

Our kiddo is the oldest of all her cousins so you can imagine my surprise when she wanted to do the flour sack baby assignment. Of course, I should have known it would be a fun adventure!

May I present Nightpain.

Yes, that is her flour sack baby's name. It's a goth vampire baby... nothing out the ordinary there!

To make your very own Flour Sack Baby you will need:

Outfit(s)

Tape

5lb bag of flour (or rice, ect)

2 pairs of knee high pantyhose

Markers (to draw face stuff)
Batting/Stuffing

Fabric glue and a scrap of fabric (optional. You could go bald and draw the eyes right on the pantyhose)

Yarn for hair (optional)

This video on how to put it together is very helpful and fun to watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GozoUvpP3IM

As a part of this lesson there will be research on the cost of raising a baby. There will be reports written about childhood injury for things like dropping Nightpain or leaving her in the car. She will be required to get a babysitter if she does not want to take Nightpain somewhere. I do not plan on babysitting! Ha! ;)

Like everyone else in the world, from time to time I get
annoyed with all the unsolicited “advice” and opinion that people bestow upon
me. I have an only child. The horror!! Gasp!! By CHOICE?! Yep.

It’s not for any real reason, so to speak, except that is what
I was blessed with. One would think that would be a good enough answer to the
big family pushers out there. Now, don’t get me wrong here I think you should
have as many kids as you want to raise! I’m all for you doing what is right for
you and me doing what it right for me. I’m absolutely positive there are some
great things about having lots of kids that I won’t experience. However, I’m
having a blast here with my only child and I wanted to share this positive
mini-list for those of us who might be just a tad tired of hearing how you
simply need to have more children.

5 fun things I enjoy about having an only:

1. Quiet time is easy to come by and keep peaceful.
We can all grab a book and chill out on the couch reading. Maybe this is
because I’m extra lucky to have a peaceful child but maybe it’s because there
aren’t any other kids to run after. Either way, we are loving it.

2. Short order cooking. We can all have
what we want for the most part just about any time. While dinner is planned, we
really don’t have a plan for breakfast and lunch. It’s easy to make a ‘special
order’ meal when I only have to do it for one person.

3. Every day is special “mommy and me” time. There is no competition for my
time or attention so anytime she wants it, it’s hers. At any free moment we
could be painting each other’s nails, playing a game together or just hanging
out. There are the typical distractions like chores and school work of course
but the rest of the time is fair game fun time!

4. Equality is easy. Since there are only 3 of us total, we find that splitting
things equally is easy and taking turns really doesn’t take long at all. We can
play split screen on most video games too!

5. Have a favorite. This is my favorite part!! In my phone and
even on some of my photo albums I nicknamed my daughter “Favorite Child.” It’s
pretty cool to have a favorite. She gets to be my favorite person in the whole wide
world.

So, next time you think you should tell a mom how sad it is to only have one
child, think again!
They might be loving it. What matters is that we all love
our children, do our best and try not to mess them up. When it’s all said and
done, none of us have all the answers and one size never fits all. Love and be
loved ya’ll!

Our little crafter, Aurora, has been hard at work making gifts for her family. We wanted to share some of her favorite projects with you.

She is 14 now which is scary but super fun! It was interesting watching her create so much on her own. She found ideas she wanted to copy or use as a starting point. She picked something personal for each one of her cousins.

Starting out on top, she sewed gift bags for each child. Sewing straight lines is pretty easy! :p :) There are tons of tutorials for basic bags on the net. If you need a starting off point, check this place out.

Next up was painting. Her two favorites of her paintings were the white deer and the Minecraft one.

Another easy craft she thought she could tackle on her own was to make some onsies.

She was blessed with twin cousins this year! That Aunt and Uncle grew up on Mario so it was a natural choice. I cracked up when she asked me to print these. Teen crafters are the best!
Here's what we have done so far.

My hot wife, showing off her hard work!

Over the last year and a half we have been doing one little change at a time until we have achieved a total life re-vamp. Doing it all at once wasn't practical for us. Overwhelming leads to quitting. ;)

On an average day 2 years ago I drank an entire 12 pack of Pepsi a day. I never ate breakfast. For lunch, a frozen meal or something from a can heated up in the microwave. The only large meal of the day was dinner. In between, a little candy or chips for snacks. Often after dinner my wife and I would devour half a box of cookies. We lived like this for years. Progressively increasing portion sizes and soda amounts seemingly without noticing until we reached this point.

After the fire, we had no routine. We had no possessions. We had no stability. For some reason, this inspired us to make these more drastic changes to our lives. We needed something positive to come from that turmoil. We took a good hard look at what mattered. We want to live long, full & fun lives. We just couldn't do that morbidly obese. We wanted to be healthy, not just lose weight.

I still can't believe that is me...

Some of our changes so far have included:
- Swapping vegetable oil for coconut oil.
- Removing soda completely from our lives. I feel that this is the most important change we made for our overall health.
- Drinking the proper amount of water (half your weight in ounces).
- Baking instead of frying, just about everything. If it's fried, it is done so in coconut oil.
- Cutting down on breads. I do not need 2 rolls with dinner!! lol
- Cutting back on and removing beef and pork. More chicken and turkey.
- Juicing (fresh fruits and veggies) for breakfast a couple days a week.
- Family walks, at least 30 mins, at least 4 times a week.
- Nightly body weight workout at home. We do this together. If you have a support partner, it helps!

If you are looking for advice on your journey or tips, here are mine:

Reason #125 to lose the weight:
Our arms go around each other now!

1. There are not miracle products. I know that they work for some people, but not most people and it's rare. More rare than they want you to believe. So, be real with yourself and don't be taken in by those companies. It's a money pit and a self esteem pit.

2. Say something nice to yourself EVERY day. Do it. Losing weight is not a cure all for self esteem issues if you have them. They will travel your journey with you if you let them. Accept yourself now. Appreciate yourself as you change.

3. Drink water. Seriously, it's cheap. It's calorie free. It's good for your body. It helps you lose weight. There really is no logical reason not to. Just drink water.

4. If you are going from an extremely poor food choice lifestyle, like we did, don't try to cram it all in at once. There is no deadline. Don't make it "by this day". Make it about your health, one step at a time. Those fad diets don't work because they aren't a lifelong sustainable change. Lifelong change is how you change for good. You can do it. Just don't give up! When you have a bad day, wake up the next morning, dust yourself off and get back on it. One day, one step, one week at a time.

We have been so excited about all the changes we see in ourselves and each other. We hope that you all have a wonderful and blessed day! Thanks for stopping by.Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-57817089880703177072015-01-12T09:00:00.000-06:002015-01-13T06:45:19.872-06:00Flip In Hair Extensions - DIY results on short hair

Our daughter loved her short haircut when she first got it but now, like most of us, she is annoyed with the growing out stage. She wanted to try something new and fun.

I've been missing my clip in extensions and wigs lately too.

Couture Hair is such a fun accessory!

Speaking of fun, have you guys seen this?!
Halo Couture Hair Extenstions

We loved this idea. The first photo of Aurora there with her mouth open is her watching these videos! She thinks it's the coolest.

Naturally, we set out to Do It Yourself. There are loads of Youtube DIY instruction videos. We watched several and made some adjustments to make it comfy for short haired my teen.

Here's the photo breakdown:

Top -
1. Just get ya some hair.

2. Sew or glue it together. I sewed it because I didn't want to buy glue when sewing it seemed stronger anyway.

3. Sew in your bead elastic, fishing line or whatever you are using for the clear part. We used beading/bracelet elastic because we already had it. Also, the give is comfortable.

4.-5. Then you see my hair length and me with the "flip-in" styled. I need to learn more about styling hair.. back to youtube later!

Right -
1. Kiddo loving how fast, easy and fun "flip in hair extentions" look.

2. We both have hair that is shorter than the recommended length for this kind of extention. That said, I think it looks pretty cool! She wouldn't let me style it or trim it so that it looked more blended yet. She is way too busy playing with it!!

It took me about 40 mins to make both of them. That includes me fussing with the sewing machine and adjusting to fit! Not too shabby.
Since we already had the string and I sewed instead of buying glue, the total cost of this was just the hair we chose. Not bad!!

So, go play with some hair! I gotta learn how to use a curling iron properly now. ;)

My little crafting kiddo always makes cards for guys look easy!

She used Stampin Up to make this card for her cousin. I love how simple and neat it is. Good job, Aurora.
You guys know how I love making chainmaille, right?!

This little creation is a Persian 6-in-1 cross made from aluminum. I find that I cannot weave with steel rings any more. They are just too hard on my hands!

It took me a good long while to really get the hang of this weave. It's a difficult one to get started.

I get all my rings at TheRingLord.com.
They rock and it's always right. You can't beat that! :)
Just another little card that's easy and kiddo friendly. My daughter and I have been working on a lot of thanks and birthday cards lately.
We have been slowly regaining craft supplies since the fire. We have a little tub now! It's not nearly what it was but we have been enjoying making things together again.
I was deep asleep, driving 90 to nothing in a dream. It was a shock to my system waking up like that! The cat's nail went through down by my lip, so it was pretty deep in some places. I thought I should give Mederma Advanced Scar Gel a shot.
So, on this health kick I've been cutting out things like entire bags of chips and cookies. I needed something with a little crunch and a little sweetness that isn't just bad for me. Tough one, huh?

Not at all actually. This is a 3 ingredient snack that you can add to or leave simple and it's okay to share with with your pup as well.

Pretty simple list ingredients:
Oats
Peanut butter (or almond butter)
Honey

Basically you put some oats in a bowl and add peanut butter and honey until it's about right to roll in a ball. Measuring is not needed.

Get the kids involved. My lil crafter Aurora loves rolling the balls. Of course, y'all know me, I'm all about getting the kiddo involved in cooking, snack making and juicing.

This is my little lap dog, Thor. ;)

You can add anything you like to these too!

If you start adding things like nuts, chocolate chips and things like that please hit Google and make sure that's safe for your pup before you give them any!!

My dog, Thor deeply loves these simple human and animal treats. Here he is on Petit Jean mountain last month. He absolutely loved hiking to Cedar falls. The pet friendly cabin was awesome! Big props to Petit Jean State Park.
My daughter and I have been working on making cards again. We had quite the on-hand stock before the house burned so it's time to start getting that back.

We have seen several versions of this card and this one is my daughter's. She used all SU! The Birthday greeting was from Sale-a-Bration. Grey, saffron and black.

The part of this that was really fun was layering the stamps to make a patterned paper. Aurora had so many strips and they all looked really neat. She's pretty into making patterns now.

I love crafting with my kiddo. It's fun seeing her be proud of the cards to gives out. :)Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-7033748234326646382014-05-03T13:49:00.001-05:002014-05-05T23:57:28.541-05:003 days, all fruits and veggiesI know that's not a big deal for some people out there but for this pizza loving, soda drinking, chip bag finishing family it was!

We have all seen those "cleanse" diets and that's not what we did. We read a lot of them and it didn't seem fitting with our goal. We don't want to take any pills or spices. We just wanted to simplify and gain a new appreciation for vegetables and fr
uits.

The plan:
Morning juice, snack, lunch juice, snack and dinner juice.
Snacks: Apples, carrots, bananas, celery, grapes
Juices: Mean Green, Carrot Apple Celery, Morning Glory, Carrot Apple Lemon and Green lemonade.

This is more veggies than I have eaten in my whole life...

Here's how we did:
Day 1: Sucks. Seriously. It sucks.

Day 2: Getting more used to it. The ones with apple are my favorite and the ones with kale are my least favorite. The hardest parts of the day are cooking for my daughter. Smelling the food, even though I'm not hungry is a huge temptation.

Day 3: I feel great! My body feels better. My gallbladder doesn't hurt for the first time in a while. This really is the way I think we were meant to eat.

We need vegetables and I am going to make morning juicing a priority.

My 12 yr old daughter had a glass of each of the juices with us while maintaining a regular diet as well. She didn't like a few but some she really loved. We are all in on adding this to our new regular diet. I am so proud of my family for going on this journey with me!Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-23685508655674693372014-01-25T10:33:00.005-06:002014-05-20T14:32:34.985-05:00The loss and love...

Well, Covered In Crafts will be on hold for a little while. On January 6th at 11:23pm a fire started in our home. The fire spread very quickly and even though the amazing people at the volunteer fire department gave it their all, almost nothing survived.

The house burned completely up to my daughter's room. The fire department got the flames out before it took her room. We were able to dig a precious few items. They are water damaged and smoke/ash filled but have been cleaned up to our best.

Even though we lost 99.9% of our things we feel so blessed because EVERYONE lived, even the pets! I will admit, I did run back into the house after Malice (black cat) and I will even go ahead and admit that I ran to my daughter's room in the midst of the black smoke and chaos for everything I could grab. To tell you the honest truth, I was going to go back in again after her dollhouse and anything else from her room that thought I could drag out but the flames were already in the kitchen and the smoke was so thick I didn't think I could make it.. Don't even start to lecture me, I lived so let's just move on, okay?

The fire inspector's official statement was that it was a result of an electrical short.

Lesson time. Please, step away from this post this very second and go check your smoke detector. I'll wait...

When we were sitting there in the freezing cold watching our memories and treasures burn away we thought maybe we could borrow some blankets and a coat... we had nothing but the pajamas on our backs. Did you know that the Red Cross just shows up?? Apparently the fire department or 911 calls them. They gave us a debit card with some money for clothing and food. Gosh, when you have nothing.. I can't even tell you how that feels. They even gave our daughter a teddy bear. :,) To have something in the middle of watching everything disappear, well, it was powerful. That is one charity that we will support for the rest of our lives. Go Red Cross!

Crystal ball my brother got me in Japan

The outpouring of love and support we have received has been so amazing. People we didn't even know cared about us, heck, people we didn't even know at all have been so caring, giving and compassionate. We received so many cards and messages from people who had lost their homes in the past and those who have lost family members. It's so heartbreaking... and it's a good reminder that what we lost wasn't the worst that it could have been. We are so so lucky to be alive.

Another lesson, are you ready? Find out about your insurance. Do it today. We had a policy that only covered the house so we are starting over from square one by ourselves. If you rent, get renter's insurance. If you have a home, make sure your policy gives you something that you can use to start over. This is so important! I failed my family in this. Please take that as a lesson and protect yours.

Do not worry for my family. In time we will be back in a home and have things again. For now we are blessed to have family. We are staying with a friend. She has given us all a room to share and a closet. Oh to have a closet! Oh to have clothes to put in that closet! If you have been through this you will understand how powerful and amazing it is to have the simple things again.

I'll see you soon. ;)
Y'all know I don't make cakes anymore. However, my little friend Spencer is having a party and I made this for him as a gift. Who knows what to buy kids anymore? Surely not I!

He just loves Mickey Mouse Club House. His party was so adorable too! They had the special candles and even a shirt made for him. It rocked.

I made it using Satin Ice fondant. It's an 8" & 6" stacked. All the decoration are fondant. The ears you have to do in advance, as they need time to dry, and toothpicked in place.

Thank you for stopping by my craft and crap blog. :) I hope you have a great new year!!
No fake trees for us this year. So, we took her to a wonderful place in Lonoke, AR called Schilling's Family Christmas Tree Farm.

She had a selection of types of trees but settled on this one. It's a little short for the space but we all loved how full and pretty it is. She wanted something that was about her height. This is the one you guys! The Johnson family Christmas tree for 2013!

We donated our fake tree to a local charity store, The Safe Haven Thrift Store. We haven't had a real tree in so long that we didn't even have a stand. Of course our solution had to be a crafty one! Duh!

We got a pickle bucket (FREE! My favorite!) from a friend who works for a fast food place. They toss the plastic buckets out when they are empty. What a waste for something that can totally be crafted!

We used Jute/Twine from Lowe's that is $2 a roll. I used about a roll and a third of the jute to go around the bucket, gluing every now and then with my hot glue gun. I already had the glue and glue gun so the $4 in jute is all I am out of pocket for this craft!

Then we placed the tree in the bucket and filled around it with rocks. We had a bunch left over from a garden project. They hold the tree nice and firmly in place but still allows the tree lots of water.

Not too shabby for stuff we had laying around and a bucket that usually just takes up space at the landfill!

Here's the tree in it's new home. I really want to change out the baseboards for white ones.. but for now let's just pretend it looks alright okay? ;)

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas!Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-76144930508934522222013-12-06T20:23:00.003-06:002013-12-13T18:52:28.468-06:00Just a little reminder of the beach

The weather here in AR is starting to get a little ugly and we need something cheerful to do. While digging through my craft room I came across some tins left over from the advent calendar I made a couple years ago. They already had magnets glued to the back. So, then I began wondering what we could do with these.

I remember coming across someone using them as little miniature round shadow boxes. Who knows where this idea originated so I can't quote the source but my daughter really got into the idea!

Once we picked the pictures and printed them, all that was left to do with add some sand and sea shells we found at the beach. I used a little E6 glue to put the lid on. We don't usually have things on the fridge, because I'm a bit of a neat freak but we love this little magnets and it puts a smile on my face whenever I walk by it. Just a little reminder of the amazing vacation we had this year in Destin, Florida.

We hope you are inspired to grab a kiddo and do a fun 10 minute craft with them. :) Happy crafting!

I don't cook. I have never enjoyed it and it holds nothing for me. You're thinking: "LIZ! Your CAKES!" yes yes, I cake but you should know that I don't bake it. I leave that for my better half. Ladies, you would not want to eat something I cooked.

I deeply believe that all children, boys and girls, need to learn their way around a kitchen. Why? We all eat, of course! Cooking healthy, fresh food is a life skill and I think every kid needs to learn, at least the basics.

My 12 yr old daughter and mini crafter, Aurora did these as little Thank You gifts for Thanksgiving. She got the idea from her favorite website, Pinterest. Here's the recipe she used: Mini Apple Pies (using a cupcake pan). She's so proud that she did this by herself! They are in food safe containers and placed in these adorable stamped lunch bags that she did. The stamps and ribbon are Stampin' Up!

We hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!Covered In Craftshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05765519452624051360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369858940458142526.post-61693913305824719062013-10-30T15:45:00.001-05:002013-11-28T12:34:41.908-06:00Trunk Or Treat - My Little PonyIt's no secret that our daughter loves My Little Pony and that we all adore Halloween. We have a tradition that we all dress up in theme with the kiddo picking. Hey, they are only little for a little while, why not? This year is My Little Pony. We made our costumes. LaRisa is Apple Jack, I am Pinkie Pie and of course our daughter is Rainbow Dash.

The Nightmare Night episode was our inspiration for our trunk for Trunk or Treat. The wife brought home some boxes from work. The kiddo Aurora and I painted and taped some pieces together for a background. I think she did a great job! It's nothing oober fancy but we had a blast making the stuff and hanging out.

I wanted to make tons for them to put all over the bottom but the family decided that 5 trees was good enough to represent the Everfree Forest. lol everything else we had laying around either in the craft space or in the kiddo's room.

The Nightmare Night decorations, including the Mare in the Moon were all found and printed off Google images. The toys, of course, we had. Some left over fabrics from the sewing bin covered our Rendevous' tan interior. We put some battery operated lights around under the sheer fabrics so it will glow when it gets dark. :D

We hope you all have an awesome Nightmare Night! Happy Halloween!
